Betty Lucille McCall Johnson, 82, of Abingdon, VA passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at her residence. She was born on July 9, 1936, in Lodi, VA, a daughter of the late John A. and Lucille McCall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. "Pa Bob" Johnson; two sons, Mike Johnson and Rusty Johnson; two grandchildren, Emily Johnson and Chris Johnson; a brother, John A. McCall, Jr.; a sister, Alberta McCall Copenhaver; and a son-in-law, Tony Mullins. Betty is survived by three sons, Daniel M. Johnson (Sandy), Jeffrey G. Johnson (Kim), and Joe Johnson (Dr. Deborah Wood); one daughter, Sally Johnson (Ed Keyes); and a daughter-in-law, Neva Johnson; eleven grandchildren, Jessica J. Deal (Brian), Justin Johnson, Amy Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Jessica Harris Johnson, Russell Johnson (Liz), Lauren Ferguson (Dr. Jeffrey Ferguson), Caitlin M. Johnson, Lindsay Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Ashley Johnson; also seven great grandchildren, whom were the light of her life; seven brothers, Bill McCall, Tom McCall (Rose), Eddie McCall (Brenda), Jim McCall (Carol), David McCall (Patty), Sam McCall, Steve McCall (Betty Gayle); a sister-in-law, Lena McCall; and several nieces and nephews. Ma Betty grew up on a farm in Lodi, VA along with her eight brothers and one sister. Ma Betty and Pa Bob were married on March 13, 1954 and raised beef cattle, dairy cattle, six children, and grew Burley Tobacco on their farm located near Alvarado, VA. She and Bob worked most of their adult lives in the Burley Tobacco Industry, assisting local farmers with their sales. Ma Betty was an exceptional baker, an avid reader, a wine enthusiast and self-declared "card shark". She made everyone feel welcome and everyone loved her dearly. Ma Betty was a jewel of a person and will be greatly missed. Ma Betty was a founding member of the Washington County DAR society. She had recently received an award from the DAR and a lamp is exhibited in her honor at the Abingdon Muster Grounds. She was also an active member of the Damascus Senior Citizens. A celebration of life and gathering of her many friends will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Damascus Old Mill, 215 W. Imboden Street, Damascus, VA.
