Verna “Vernie” Smith, age 65, of Damascus, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She was a life long resident of Damascus, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Roy and Juanita Morefield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnett Smith, two sisters, Jean Barlow and Kathy Morefield, and one brother, Joe Morefield. She is survived by one daughter, Selma J. Thomas of Chilhowie, Virginia; one son, Johnny L. Smith of Abingdon, Virginia; two step-sons, James Smith of Damascus, Virginia and Doug Smith of Glade Spring, Virginia; one brother, Ed Morefield of Damascus, Virginia; three granddaughters, Danielle, Tiffany, and Nikki; four great grandchildren, Selena, McKenzie, Jordan, and Tanner; a special friend, Channing; two very special friends, Susie Smith and Corliss Watkins; and several nieces and nephews. The memorial service for Verna “Vernie” Smith will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the graveside at Mock Cemetery in Damascus, Virginia with Rev. Gary Ritchie officiating.
