Steven Lee Powell, age 52, of Abingdon, Virginia passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and has lived in Washington County, Virginia for ten years. He was a master carpenter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carole Geotz. He is survived by his parents, John and Patricia Nelson of Meadowview, Virginia; two sisters, Mary Ellen and Sherry Lynn Eckenrode; one brother, James B. Gatton; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to request the presence of Steven’s family and friends for a Gathering of Remembrance on Saturday, February 28, 2015 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. at Garrett Funeral Home. Steve was a great big brother. Always ready &willing to help anyone. I am very thankful for all his friends that attended his memorial. It meant a lot to out family. It was nice to see how much Steven was loved & will b missed. Rest in peace big bro. I love you & will miss you.
Pat I am so very sorry for your loss. Steve and I had worked well together on several projects as you know. I had only gotten to know Steven a few years but he had become a good friend and will be greatly missed by me and Lorrian. My thoughts go out to you and your family.
The Bone Fire family was saddened to hear about the passing of one of our favorite people. Steve was more than a patron. He had become a member of our family and one of the characters who give Bone Fire its color. Steve never missed a chance to strike up a conversation with people sitting next to him and always made visitors feel welcome. Pat, so sorry to hear of your loss. Steve, was a good friend to our family. He was a very skilled carpenter and shared that skill doing for others. He and Brian together built me a beautiful porch, and the last day they worked, I finally got iced tea made sweet enough for Steve. Brian will miss him most, but he will always be in all our hearts forever.

To find out that I lost a big brother was upsetting. Then I remembered what I always tell the families of my patients that have passed; "He is with God and smiling down upon us, because he now knows heaven and it's glory and he can rejoice and be at peace."
