Stanley Barr, age 73, of Chilhowie, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee. He was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee and was a son of the late Lloyd and Edith Barr. He had lived most of his life in the Mill Creek community in Chilhowie, Virginia. Mr. Barr was a retired highway engineer from W & L Construction Company. He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, golfing, and tinkering on old cars. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Barr and Tommy Barr; and one sister, Sue McVey. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Janet Wilson Barr; one daughter, Trish Barr Halley and her husband, Dave, of Holly Springs, North Carolina; two sons, Reid Barr and his wife, Sandra, of Fries, Virginia and Stephen Barr and his wife, Angie, of Wilmington, North Carolina; three sisters, Anita Sheets and her husband, Jamie, of Chilhowie, Virginia, Polly Scott and her husband, Roy, of Abingdon, Virginia and Libby Sturgill and her husband, Vernon, of Chilhowie, Virginia; two brothers, Sidney Barr and his wife, Polly, and Ronnie Barr and his wife, Debbie, all of Chilhowie, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Cecil McVey of Chilhowie, Virginia; ten grandchildren, Katlyn Halley, Rachael Halley, Derrick Barr, Shawn Barr, Samantha Kerley, Tanner Arnold, Kiley Barr, Harris Barr, Avery Barr, and Bailey Barr; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Chilhowie, Virginia and the funeral service will follow at 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the church with Pastor Luther Roberts and Pastor Jeannie Denton officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45 P.M. Sunday for the committal service. Pallbearers will be Andy Widener, Tony McVey, Jim Forrester, Mike Lowe, Sidney Barr Jr., and Dan Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Taylor, Ken Taylor, Johnny Forrester, Jim Bishop, Larry McClure, Charles Junior Blevins, Jack Wilson, Stuart Wright, and Ronnie Reed. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the Lebanon United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, c/o Cliff Burnette, P.O. Box 5028, Chilhowie, VA 24319. I really enjoyed working with Stanley. We also had some great times on golf trips, especially The Harbor Club in Greensboro Ga. And the Santee South Carolina trips. We will certainly miss him.
