He was a son of the late Jim and Dovie Gentry and was a resident of Washington County, Virginia most all of his life. He worked as a coal miner for fifteen years and lived in Abbs Valley, Virginia until 1947. He worked as a farmer most all of his life. He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ in Taylors Valley, Virginia and had attended Zion United Methodist Church since 1944. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Ann Adams, and six sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Edith Gentry; one daughter, Esther Land and her husband, Hunter, of Abingdon, Virginia; one son, Bill Gentry and his fiancé, Danielle Grayson, of Elizabethton, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Hunter Land Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, Sabrina Adams, Melissa McKinney and her husband, Clay, Billy Gentry, and Comora Tolliver and her husband, Britt; four great grandchildren, Ryley McKinney, Adam McKinney, Ian Land, and Ethan Land; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, May 31, 2009 in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harry Layell officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Bill Gentry, Hunter Land Sr., Hunter Land Jr., Billy Gentry, Adam McKinney, Clay McKinney, Jim Jones, and Tommy Musick. Honorary pallbearers will be John Roberts, Johnny Orr, Donald Widener, Charlie Musick, Lee Musick, Steve Sheets, Dr. William Baker, Dr. Anthony Broglio, Dr. Greg Griffith, Dr. James Denton, Dr. Scott Hunter, and Dr. Zhu. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Zion United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Donald Widener, 31331 Wright Road, Damascus, VA 24236. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:45 P.M. Sunday prior to the funeral service at Garrett Funeral Home. Blaine and I are saddened to hear of your loss. We attended school with Esther, Betty, and Billy at Bethel School, and always had the utmost respect for the family. May God bless you all in this time of sorrow, and may the memories sustain you, and peace quiet your soul knowing he is with Betty.

I will always have wonderful, happy memories of the times I spent at Aunt Edith's and Uncle Roy's visiting my cousins. Uncle Roy always had a big smile on his face and many times that mischevious grin.
He will be missed by all those who loved him dearly.
