Owens, age 81, of Damascus, Virginia, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2005, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. He was born in Gary, West Virginia, and was the son of the late Clyde and Pearl Owens. Mr. Owens was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant (E9) from the U.S. Air Force in 1968. After his military career, he went to college at East Tennessee State University and graduated in 1973. He then taught in the industrial education department for four years at Virginia High School in Bristol, Virginia. Mr. Owens has made his home in Damascus, Virginia, since 1978. He was a previous co-owner of Deer Field Golf Course in Damascus and enjoyed golfing and being outdoors. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9830. He was an elder and Sunday school teacher at Suburban Christian Church in Bristol, Virginia. Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his wife, Amilee Wren Owens, and a brother, Jack Owens. He is survived by one daughter, Patricia O. MacDermott and her husband, Richard, of Damascus, Virginia; one son, Richard L. Owens, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two granddaughters, Katie Owens and Jennifer Moss and her husband, Jeff; two grandsons, Lucas C. Owens and Robert MacDermott; two great grandchildren, Jennette Moss and Jeffery Moss; three sisters, Lillian Parker, of Plano, Texas, Ruth McVey, of Bristol, Virginia, and Retha Ganoe, of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers, Bert Owens and his wife, Irene, of Bristol, Virginia, and Johns Owens and his wife, Terry, of Baltimore, Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Estelle Owens, of Taylors Valley, Virginia, Charlotte Girard, of Gainesville, Florida, and Lillian Swicord, of Macon, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Monday, April 4, 2005, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Richard Pannell, minister officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus with the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Lucas Owens, Robert MacDermott, Jeff Moss, Jeffery Moss, John Kegley, and Jim Horton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Suburban Christian Church, 20290 Wood Howell Road, Bristol, VA 24202 or to a favorite charity of ones choice. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 P.M. Monday prior to the funeral service at Garrett Funeral Home.
