Ralph L. Garrett, age 74, of 29306 Zion Church Road, Damascus, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Damascus, Virginia and was the son of Mary F. Garrett, of Damascus, Virginia and the late James W. Garrett. He was retired from United Telephone Company, which is now Sprint, after thirty-nine years of service, a mason and past master of the Liberty Hall Lodge No. 104 AF & AM., a member of the Washington County Moose Lodge #1966, a life member of the Washington County Life Saving Crew. Mr. Garrett had coached little league baseball, was a boy scout leader for several years, an avid outdoors man, fisherman, hunter, and had excelled in archery and was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mona V. Garrett; three daughters, Joy Cole, of Damascus, Virginia, Jan Greer and her husband, Boyd, of Glade Spring, Virginia, and Jamie Huffman, and her husband, Mike, of Damascus, Virginia; four sons, Kim Garrett and his wife, Denise, of Petersburg, Kentucky, Kent Garrett and his wife, Sharon, of Galax, Virginia, Terry Garrett and his wife, Roxanna, of Blue Ridge, Virginia, and Todd Garrett and his wife, Penny, of Damascus, Virginia; three sisters, Carolyn Grubb and her husband, Ernest, of Bristol, Tennessee, Shirley Taylor and her husband, Jack, of Abingdon, Virginia, and Barbara DeBusk and her husband, Don, of Bristol, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special family member and friend, Beje Garrett, of Forest, Virginia; and a special friend, Charles Jones, of Damascus, Virginia. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Damascus, Virginia with Rev. Alan McCullough officiating. The committal service and interment will be 11:00 A. M. Thursday, November 4, 2004 at the Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Travis Singleton, Jeremy Garrett, Brandon Garrett, Troy Garrett, Brian Garrett, Josh Garrett, Cody Cole, and Peyton Garrett. The family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 458, Damascus, Virginia 24236 or Cancer Outreach Association, 104 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, Virginia 24211. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Forrest Swan and Dr. Emory Robinette and their staff, also nurses and staff of the fifth floor at Johnston Memorial Hospital and his hospice nurse, Naomi Barrett. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 P. M. Wednesday, prior to the funeral service at the First Baptist Church or anytime at the residence.
