Marjorie Harris Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Marjorie Poe Harris, 93 years old, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born August 23, 1912 to Wells and Jane Hand Poe. Marjorie married Allen Harris and lived with him in Newport News, VA from 1934 till 1946, when they moved to Damascus where they operated the Silver Moon Café until the early 1950's. She later worked at W. V. Ramsey's 5 & 10 until she and Allen managed Johnsons Ben Franklin in Clintwood, VA from 1958 to 1965 when they again returned to Damascus, where she was employed at the L & S Grocery and later was employed by the Green Thumb Program. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Marjorie has been a resident at Valley Health Care since 2001 and her family is extremely thankful to the nurses and aides on Third Wing who cared for her so lovingly. Marjorie is predeceased by her husband, Allen, her parents, three brothers, Walter, William and Howard Poe, three sisters, Mae Woodruff, Maude Hand and Minnie Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Brand and husband, Joe; three step-granddaughters, Madeline Brand Pittorf and husband, Larry, of Hannibal, NY with their five children, Mary Brand Lancaster and husband, Paul, of Norman, OK and Martha Brand, of Norman, OK; and several nieces and nephews also survive her. Marjorie is also survived by a very special niece, Rachel Baughman, who has so lovingly helped care for her over the years; also her very special friend of many years and room mate at Valley, Gladys Greer. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday, March 19, 2006 in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Chandler officiating. The committal service and interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bob Cole, Fred Blevins, Charles Cook, Arthur Jones, Eugene Blevins, Michael Baughman, and Marty Berry. The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 P. M.
