Taylors Valley, VA Levina "Estelle" Ball Owens, age 90, of Taylors Valley, VA died on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack K. Owens; parents, Delta and S.W. Ball; siblings, Margaret Blevins, Ken Ball, Betty Davidson, Gaye Bowers, and Faye McGuire. She is survived by her daughters, Rosella Dixon and Noella Griggs, and grandchildren, Brett, Cody, and Caleb Dixon, and Melissa Griggs all of Warner Robins, GA. Also surviving are siblings, Helen Galliher, Edgar Ball (Faye) and Russell Ball (Winnie) all of Taylors Valley, VA. Estelle was a member of the Walnut Grove Church of Brethren and enjoyed singing in the church choir wherever she lived around the country as Jack served in the Air Force. Ballroom dancing in her younger days, Karaoke at the Taylors Valley Community Club, serving as an Officer in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and writing enriched her life. She retired as a Civil Service secretary with the U.S. Air Force after 20 years. She and Jack, along with the other "Owens boys", owned and operated Deerfield Golf Course in Damascus after they retired. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 10:45 am Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Garrett Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 11:00 am Saturday, July 8, 2017, in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Martha Roudebush officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. Pallbearers will be family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, 37151 Chestnut Mountain Road, Damascus, VA 24236, West Richmond Church of the Brethren, 7612 Wanymala Road, Henrico, VA 23229, or the Penny F. My family and I are so sorry for your loss. Memories of Essie will always be in our hearts. Essie and Jack were friends and next door neighbors for many years while in Warner Robins. They were greatly missed when they retired and moved back to Virginia. One of my favorite memories was of Essie helping my son bake a 7-up pound cake for a 4-H contest. It won 2nd place and they both were tickled pink. Another sweet memory was of the year our gardens came in and we were all making lime pickles. By the time they finished Jack said they should have been called "divorce pickles".
