John Preston Seymore, III passed away on March 22, 2020. He was the owner/chef of the iconic restaurant, Mojo’s Trailside Café and Coffee located in Damascus, VA. Known far and wide as a renowned chef and food aficionado, John used the skills gained from Greek chefs at Joe’s inn in Richmond, later experiences at Lunch/Dinner also in Richmond and international travel to elevate a small coffee shop in Damascus into a fine dining facility. John enjoyed off-roading in his Jeep with his nephew, Logan, traveling, spending time with friends and family (especially his nephews and niece), meeting the needs of hikers/bikers and locals, and always promoting quality over profit. Survivors include his parents, John and Susan Seymore of Damascus, his sisters Jill Horsch, Damascus, Leslie Beale (Kevin), Richmond and Mary Ann Wakefield (Jon), Cary NC. Six nephews - Logan Riendeau, Damascus, Will, Garrett and Amare Wakefield, (Cary NC) and Chris and Carter Beale, Richmond. One niece - Paige Beale, Richmond. He also left behind his beloved staff at Mojo’s and a very special puppy named Harley. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John P. Seymore, III Scholarship Fund. This fund will grant scholarships to a graduating high school culinary student annually to help offset tuition to a culinary school to provide opportunities for aspiring chefs to acquire the skills to become successful chefs like John. John was an incredible person to be around. He came to Tennessee quite often to buy for the restaurant or vacation in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. I first met him in Asheville and of course he knew all of the right places to eat. I saw him in March when he returned from Mexico. He had also gotten a new tattoo since I had seen him last. The tattoo was of one of my favorite paintings in my house ... A blonde dia day las muertas woman. He always made of point to contact me when he was in Knoxville or the surrounding area. My heart hurts knowing that I didn’t know when it happened.

Mr. And Mrs. Seymore, my husband and I want to extend our deepest condolences to you and your family. John was such a talented and wholehearted person from what we knew when we would visit Mojos. He always had a smile on his face and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Hearing the news of his passing shattered our hearts. We know that his legacy will live on no matter what--with his fun striped socks and positive attitude, you could tell his employees enjoyed working for, and with him. Losing someone who's very loved and appreciated by the community is never easy, and I cannot imagine what your family is experiencing. I just pray that God continues to wrap his arms around you all during this time. John will always be in our hearts!
My heart breaks for all of you during this time. John will always hold a special place in my heart. His hugs and that smile could make any bad day better. Hugs, love, and prayers to all of you during this time.
My heart breaks for Susan, John and the entire Seymore Clan. John was a great friend and supporter of the Appalachian Trail Community and the Trail will never be quite the same in Damascus with out his presence. We are all truly grateful for the efforts he put toward making each Hiker he met feel welcome going as far as to offer work when more than one member of our AT community was in a desperate need of funds to continue there journey. May God be with you all during this most horrible of times.
Best,
Anthony Westmoreland
Our hearts and love go out to Mr. and Mrs. Seymore and all the MoJo's family. John's passion, zeal for life and talent will forever be remembered by my family. I will forever cherish our time at his table.
Chris Walters and family.
I met John about 5 years ago. I visit my Mom once a year for a month and I use to eat breakfast & lunch and would get my work done at Mojos. Great atmosphere! John has a big heart, great to talk to and was a fantastic cook! He will definitely be missed!
Dear Susan, John and family, words cannot express the sorrow that is in my heart for you. I have many fond memories of John’s “free hugs” and delicious mocha lattes with my sister, Carolyn, when I lived in Damascus. A bright spot in our day!! Praying that God will wrap all of you in peace and comfort as only HE can do. Much love to all.
