He was a lifelong resident of Damascus, Virginia. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during WWII and was retired from the Columbus McKinnon Corporation. Mr. Poe was a member of the Laurel Community Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Spenial Rutledge Poe. He was survived by one step-daughter, Darlene Tolbert, of Blountville, TN; four step-sons, Bobby Woodard, of Bristol, VA, Lonnie Woodard, of CA; Ronald Woodard, of Tappahannock, VA, and Donnie Woodard, of Abingdon, VA; one brother-in-law, Samuel L. Widener, of Damascus, VA; a special friend, Amie Viers, of Bristol, VA; twelve step-grandchildren; ten step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted 8:30 P. M. Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Warren Wilson officiating. The committal service and interment will be 2:00 P. M. Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Bethel Cemetery in Abingdon, Virginia with Highlands Fellowship Veteran's Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be D. J. Woodard, Cecil McCallister, Mike Baughman, Jack DeBusk, Randy Forrester, Lawrence Lewis, Jack Johnson, Jeffrey Widener, and Bill Tolbert. Honorary pallbearers will be all his friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, 208 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN 37604. The family will receive friends from 6:30 P. M. to 8:15 P. M. Tuesday prior to the funeral service at Garrett Funeral Home. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff and family friends he had at Ridgefield Assisted Living Home in Seven Mile Ford, VA where he had made his home for the past 2 ½ years.
