I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: II Timothy 4:7 J. Herman Widener, age 83, of 33183 Crofton Lane, Glade Spring, Virginia, went to be with the Lord and his precious son while surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia, and was a son of the late John and Elsie Widener. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a loving son, James Ernest Widener, in 1962, a son-in-law, Louis Trinkle, in 1993, and eight sisters. He was a farmer and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church since 1939, where he had served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and a choir leader for many years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth E. Widener; seven daughters, Nancy Trinkle, of Bristol, Virginia, Rita Sturgill and her husband, Bob, of Bristol, Virginia, Judy Ratcliff and her husband, Joe, of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Pat Bobo and her husband, Steve, of Meadowview, Virginia, Connie Denton and her husband, Greg, of Bristol, Virginia, Brenda Jessee and her husband, Tim, of Meadowview, Virginia, and Joyce Tester and her husband, Marty, of Glade Spring, Virginia; four sons, Leo Widener and his wife, Ann, of Glade Spring, Virginia, Dennis Widener and his wife, Lavone, of Damascus, Virginia, Gene Widener and his wife, Sandy, of Damascus, Virginia, and Steve Widener and his wife, Trish, of Glade Spring, Virginia; three sisters, Frances Blevins, of Bristol, Tennessee, Grey Miller, of Bristol, Virginia, and Eva Mae Cunningham, of Leesburg, Virginia; one brother, Bob Widener, of Damascus, Virginia; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Walter Howell, Jim Phillips, Jarrod Sweet, Amber Sword, and Gene Anderson. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 16, 2006 in the Pleasant View Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Tester and Evangelist Bob Steele officiating. The committal service and interment will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Glade Spring, Virginia. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers and his granddaughters will serve as flower attendants. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Home Health Care and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for all their special care given to Mr. Widener during his time of illness. Mr. Widener's body will be taken back to his residence to lie in state where the family will receive friends at anytime after 12:00 Noon on Friday, December 15, 2006.
