Gladys Greer

Gladys Dolinger Greer, age 105, of Damascus, Virginia passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She was a resident of Washington County, Virginia most all of her life and had been a resident of Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Virginia since 2001. She was the daughter of the late John R. Dolinger and Dorcus McClure Dolinger. Mrs. Greer was a charter member of the Damascus Senior Citizens where she served on the board of directors. She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church, where she was in charge of the nursery for over twenty years. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Hoy W. Greer; one son, Charles P. Greer; and two sons-in-law, Curtis Williams and Tim Bobo.  She is survived by three daughters, Virginia G. Williams of Abingdon, Virginia, Janice G. Johnson and her husband, Troy, of Abingdon, Virginia, and Linda G. Bobo of Morristown, Tennessee; two sons, Rev. James Edward Greer and his wife, Nancy, of Bedford, Virginia, and Robert Wayne Greer and his wife, Eileen, of Little River, South Carolina; one sister, Ruth Dolinger Cassell Rouse of Chilhowie, Virginia; 12 grandchildren, Patty Roberts, David Greer, Kathy Saunders, Charlene Grigsby, Teresa Owens, Pam Wooten, Brawner Greer, Ashley Greer, Robin Pitsenbarger, Alice Scott, Alan Pruitt, and Kristi P. Yorko; 20 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Joyce Sturgill, Betty Pennington, Tim Blevins, Aaron Catron, Heather Prater, Carol Asher, and the 3rd Wing Nursing Staff of Valley Health Care Center.  The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Guynn and Rev. Jeremy Garrett officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Alan Pruitt, Brawner Greer, Richard Jerkins, Troy Johnson, Tom Scott, David Greer, Thomas Scott, and Aaron Catron. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 993, Damascus, VA 24236. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
