For as long as can remember Aunt Ellen has been in my life, maybe not physically since I didn’t see her that often as an adult but in pictures and stories that my Mom has told. She graduated with my Dad, Buddy Vestal. He often said that he would not have passed math had it not been for Aunt Ellen, she always seemed surprised by that but later I learned that it was her encouragement to my Dad and to other students. I remember her when Uncle Robert was so sick and then raising two boys by herself. She was a strong woman. My Mom loved talking to her on the phone and has greatly missed that. She remembers Aunt Ellen as a teenager and said that she always looked so pretty.
The last time I saw her I told her that I believe that she had grown a couple of inches (she was always so petite), she laughed at that.
I’ll always have happy memories of Aunt Ellen, playing in her yard, rolling down her bank. Her house was always so spotless, when I remarked how pretty her floors were, she proudly told me that my grandfather had sanded and stained them years ago.
Love you, Aunt Ellen.

Sam and family,
Saddened to learn of the death of Ellen Smith. Ellen was the bookkeeper at Holston High School when I began my teaching career there in 1972, and she was still there when I left in 1989. In fact, she faithfully served the Washington County Schools for 35 years. Her bookkeeping skills were precise and correct...you could be sure of that. She was a kind, Christian woman. I m blessed to have crossed paths with her.
