Carol Ann Hockett Burke, 64, of Meadowview, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at her residence. She was a native of Washington County, Virginia, born on November 18, 1952, a daughter of the late William Thomas Hockett and Mattie Gladys Hall Hockett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Sam Burke; a brother, William D. "Billy" Hockett; and beloved sisters/brothers-in-law.Her and her husband enjoyed farming together in Russell County, Virginia for many years. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Meadowview, VA. She loved her church and church family and was known for helping care for others. She enjoyed working outdoors and spending time with family.Carol is survived by her daughter, Michelle Jones Surber and her husband, Dale; two sisters, Betty Copenhaver and her husband, Roger and Rachel Johnson and her husband, Norman; two sisters-in-law, Karen Hockett and Lois Banner and her husband, Sammy; a brother-in-law, Buddy Burke and his wife, Fern; two grandchildren, Autumn Surber and Grayson Surber; several nieces and nephews; a first cousin, Norma Jean Schrantz, who helped and provided care and friendship; and last but not least, her best friend and canine companion, Scooby. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Johnston Memorial Cancer Center Staff, Hometown Hospice, Dr. Hammad, and Dr. DeBord for all the care shown to Carol during her illness.The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Beulah Baptist Church, 19126 Monroe Road, Meadowview, VA. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM Saturday at the church with Pastor Dwayne Dillard officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Grassy Creek Cemetery in Castlewood, VA. Pallbearers will be Greg Johnson, Brian Hockett, Mike Schrantz, Steve Fulton, Darrell Burke, Dave Finch, and Sammy Banner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter "Smokey" Wade, Lynn Hockett, and James Hockett. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Penny F. Garrett Sarcoma Foundation, 29394 Zion Church Road, Damascus, VA 24236.
