Doris W. Cook, 88, of Damascus, VA went home to be with her Lord and join her husband, Charles Cook, the love of her life on Monday, October 9, 2017 at her residence. She was born in Damascus, VA on September 11, 1929, a daughter of the late James and Georgia Wilson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lenna Nelson and Wanda Harreld. She was a life long resident of Damascus and was a member of the First Baptist Church where she had formerly served as the church secretary for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Miller and her husband, Larry, of Bristol, VA; one nephew, Robert Nelson and his wife, Judy; four nieces, Brenda Whitaker and her husband, Harold, Joyce Cress and her husband, Robin, Judy Reece and her husband, Darrell, and Kathy Saffer and her husband, Jerry; one brother-in-law, Robert Cook; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Dolinger, Rebecca Heath, and Mary Thomas; and special friends, Patty Blevins, Dixie McCracken, Maggie Hand, and Don Foster. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rick and Cheria Rouse and Mountain States Hospice nurse, Nicki Crossman, for all the love and care shown to Doris during her illness. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:45 PM Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Garrett Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 PM Tuesday in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Alderman and Pastor Scott Price officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. Pallbearers will be Robert Nelson, Robin Cress, Darrell Reece, Harold Whitaker, James Blevins, and Rick Rouse. Honorary Pallbearers will be Don Foster and the members of Lifeway Sunday School Class of Fellowship Chapel in Bristol, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to First Baptist Church Future Fund, P.O. Box 993, Damascus, VA 24236 or The Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services Foundation, P.O. Box 849, Salem, VA 24153. So sorry to read of Doris's passing. It has been many years since I have visited with her, but she and Charles were such a joy in my life when I lived in Damascus. Saw them many places, church and when they lived across the street from me. I know that Charles was probably waiting on her when she entered heaven's gates.
