Charles R. “Ronnie” Reed, age 74, of Damascus, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. He was the son of the late Vance Reed and is survived by his mother, Lillie Nichols Sweet of Damascus, Virginia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Damascus Post. He retired as a city mail carrier from the U.S. Postal Service. Ronnie was a mason and was a member of the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. Post No. 104 in Damascus, Virginia and the E.H. Gill Royal Arch Chapter 50 in Bristol, Virginia and the Jericho Shriners. He was an honorary life member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department. He was the previous owner of Quincy’s in Damascus and was a member of the Damascus Church of Christ on Railroad Avenue. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Slagle, Louise Rhymer, and Mary Tester. In addition to his mother, he was survived by his wife, Debbie L. Reed; a step-son, Brad Loyd of Damascus, Virginia; one half-sister, Cathy Weaver and her husband, Carmen, of Mountain City, Tennessee; one half-brother, Robert “Frosty” Sweet and his wife, Cindy, of Bristol, Tennessee; a very special friend, Darrell Briere of Damascus, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 6:45 P.M. Friday, October 10, 2014 at Garrett Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 P.M. Friday in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Walter Staude officiating. A Masonic Service will also be conducted by the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge Post No. 104. The committal service and entombment will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Virginia with military graveside rites conducted by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. The family, minister, pallbearers, and friends will all meet at 9:30 A.M. Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Rhymer, Ronnie Slagle, Douglas Slagle, Steven Sweet, Roy Summey, and David “Wolf” Blair. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bishop, Jim Forrester, John Forrester, Joe Widener, Tim Brown, John Garrett, Matthew Garrett, James Gilland, John Henderson, Dennett Dwyer, and Mike Lowe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
